The black cover you have removed should be the only 'filter'/trap in the drainage system inside the machine. The eggy smell you described has to be caused by one of 4 things; 1. Smell coming back through the drain, indicating that there is no water trap - easiest way to check this would be to disconnect the drain hose from the wall, smell the drain and see if it is the same smell or not.
