Chicago arranger and record producer Johnny Pate – now 84 and by all accounts still going strong – is fondly remembered by soul fans for his work with the Curtis Mayfield-led Impressions at ABC/Paramount in the 60s. In the following decade Pate branched out into movie scoring, as well as writing the orchestral charts for Curtis Mayfield’s soundtrack to the seminal blaxploitation flick Superfly and penning the soundtracks to Brother On The Run and Shaft In Africa. It’s perhaps no surprise that this forgotten and obscure instrumental LP, cut for MGM in 1970, sounds remarkably like a lost movie score. It features a large ensemble comprised of the cream of the then-Big Apple R&B session mafia – drummer Bernard Purdie, bassist Chuck Rainey, guitarist Cornell Dupree and organist Richard Tee – who get to do what they do best on 10 stylish Pate compositions.
The music ranges from upbeat, soulful big band funk – exemplified by the upbeat title track and the propulsive, flute-led You’re Starting Too Fast – to meditative and atmospheric mood pieces such as Constant Wind, where chromatic woodwind lines add a palpable cinematic quality to the arrangement. A fascinating funk curio.
