Nachtmystium Black Meddle Part 2 Rarest

A preface: I love Pink Floyd. To me they are one of music's pinnacles, the greatest prog rock band of all time, and just plain awesome. I love black metal. To me it's one of the pinnacle genres of music. Mixing the two is a dream come true, and when I first heard of Nachtmystium in 2014, shortly after the whole crap with Blake Judd (while I separate art from artist, I have no shame in saying that man is a total fuckup) began, their album 'The World We Left Behind' didn't strike me as all that much.

So I moved on from them for the time being. Later, I returned to Nachtmystum to explore their entire discography and upon finding the Assassins: Black Meddle duology, I began to see what people were talking about.

However, in the grand scheme of things, I was left kind of underwhelmed. First things first, the good stuff about this album. It's produced quite well. Not overly clean but definitely clean enough to accommodate the psychedelic influences and eerie (yet not traditional-black-metal eerie) atmosphere. The guitar work is more rhythmic than melodic, and does fit into a typical black metal style. Unlike typical black metal, the bass has more prominence than previous Nachtmystium albums.

Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. Album has made him at least in part responsible for 2010’s best black metal. Rare points where the band.

However, the musical emphasis is on keyboards and the general experimental atmosphere. Keyboards, ambience, and samples are the most prominent in the mix and instruments like the Moog and saxophone can be heard on certain songs. Judd's vocals have a rough yet rather understandable aura to them, unlike typical shrieks.

Brother Charger 622 Manual Lymphatic Drainage. While for the most part an excellent bit of experimental black metal, there are some flaws to this album. Firstly, it could have been longer. I have no problem with albums trimming the fat, but the hype of Pink Floyd meets black metal is too much to NOT warrant unapologetically bloated progfests.

This album has no counterpart to 'Shine On.' The use of 'exotic' instruments (for black metal) especially in the instrumentals is as close as we get, really. And compared to the crazy experiments and threshold-crossing of other black metal bands like Ihsahn, Panopticon, Oranssi Pazuzu, Mesarthim, Schammasch, and Leviathan to name just a few, this isn't nearly as mindblowing as it's hyped up to be. Still a good album with a plethora of elements done right, no question about it, but its legacy doesn't quite hold up today.

I discovered Nachtmystium several months ago via the tag 'psychedelic black metal' on Last.fm. I actually laughed at it and checked out the band without much expectation. All I can say is: mind-blown. Nachtmystium are one of the most (if not THE most) original and innovative bands I have come across in black metal.

Black Meddle Part I starts out with a cover of Pink Floyd's 'One of These Days'. I heard that riff start and I knew already that I would love this album forever. It's done so tastefully and sets the obscure mood of the album right off the bat. The album follows through with a super fun song, “Assassins”, and damn, the chorus on this thing is great!

There are also some strange electronic parts subtly in the background and this is where the “psychedelic” comes in. Nachtmystium loves to use strange effects and they aren’t afraid to experiment at all, and you just can’t help but to admire them for it. The next song is by far the highlight of the album, “Ghosts of Grace”. It’s basically a really exciting punk song with screamed vocals. Easily one of the top 5 choruses I have heard in my life.
